Training Process

The Aspirant Technique is used in all training at Isaac Royal Farm. This technique allows you to become one with your horse and ride through the levels with ease and grace. Carolyn Rose has written a series of books that explain the training technique in detail.

Training at Isaac Royal Farm begins with foal imprinting. With our breeding program students advanced to beginner learn the basics of foal imprinting from day one. It is very important that all our horses are safe, friendly, and have a good temperment for future riding. The majority of horses used in our school program were all born at the farm and trained so that beginner students are able to ride them in lessons.

When horses are around 3 years old they are started on the long-lines or the lauffer reins. We do horses individually in the ring and also in groups together. We use long-lines more than a single line so that the horse becomes familiar with the outside rein and is able to change directions smoothly.

Once the horse is started under saddle they are taught how to balance off the inside shoulder, bend correctly in the body, always carry their back up, and stay light in the hand. Our horses are not driven forward or ridden for long sessions so that they have less stress on their legs and learn to listen to the
rider's seat for collection. We incorporate a lot of long and low to strengthen the horse's back and figures to supple the horse so they are loose and elastic throughout their body.

Here Lydia Rose is shown teaching her Lipizzan mare, Vienna to piaffe. The piaffe is started with ground work, and then performed at Intermediare 2 and Grand Prix. Lydia trained Vienna to Grand Prix, competing at USDF Recognized shows.
